The Great Temple of Isis

This colossal sanctuary forms the core of the Philae complex, built to honor the goddess of motherhood and magic.

Constructed around 280 BCE during the Ptolemaic Kingdom, this temple served as the last active ancient Egyptian cult center. The site remained open until Justinian I officially closed it in 550 AD. The entire structure was moved block by block to Agilkia Island to escape Nile flooding.

Today, you walk through towering stone gateways to reach the dark inner rooms. The walls feature carvings that span centuries, showcasing both ancient Egyptian mythology and early Christian history.

First Pylon

10 minutesMain temple entrance

This massive 18-meter-high gateway marks the grand processional entrance to the main temple. Its massive walls feature reliefs of Ptolemy XII striking down his enemies. Look closely at the right side of the structure. You can spot French inscriptions left by soldiers during Napoleon's 1799 expedition.

Birth House (Mammisi)

15 minutesCarved Hathor columns

This colonnaded structure celebrates the birth of the falcon god Horus. Wall reliefs clearly show Isis nursing the infant Horus in the Delta swamps. Beautifully carved columns topped with faces of the goddess Hathor line the exterior. This is an excellent location for photography.

Second Pylon & Inner Sanctuary

20 minutesEarly Christian carvings

This second gateway leads into the Hypostyle Hall and the dark inner sanctuary. Priests once kept the sacred barque of Isis in this central room. The walls reveal the site's complex history as a reused religious space. You will see Coptic crosses carved into the walls and defaced statues from its era as a Christian church.
